„Doppel-Album-Release“: Dirty Fonzy im ausführlichen Interview
Als ich im Januar 2021 von unserem Chefredakteur zwei Alben der Band Dirty Fonzy bekam, wusste ich zuerst nicht, wie ich die Band einordnen sollte. Doch das Cover deutete schon an, in welcher Richtung denn die Band unterwegs ist. Und tatsächlich. Purer Rock`n`Roll der Marke Hellacopters, Backyard Babies, Turbonegro, Gluecifer, aber auch ab und an eine Prise Rancid. Eingelegt und für gut befunden. Top Tipp ähhh Rock Tipp der Woche. Für mich ein Grund, auch in die alten Alben reinzuhören und die Jungs zu kontaktieren. Sehr gefreut habe ich mich, als diese zugestimmt haben, dem Tough Magazine einige Fragen zu beantworten.
Hey ihr Lieben von Dirty Fonzy. Schön dass ihr euch die Zeit nimmt. Wobei erwischen wir euch gerade?
Ju: Hey Marc und alle vom Tough Magazine! Hier ist Ju DrumsAreCool von Dirty Fonzy :) Wie geht es Dir? Momentan erwischst du mich in meiner Stadt, in Toulouse, Frankreich und genauer gesagt in unserem Proberaum, haha.
Danke, mir geht es gut. Für diejenigen die euch noch nicht kennen, stellt euch bitte vor.
Ju: Dirty Fonzy ist eine 4-köpfige Punkrock-Band aus Albi, Frankreich. Manchmal sind wir eher in Singalong-Stimmung mit einigen Freunden in einem Pub und haben einen Pop-Punk-Touch, manchmal sind wir eher wie Stage-Diving in der Box und am Ende haben wir eine hardcore, melodische Hardcore-Seite, haha. Das ist in gewisser Weise Dirty Fonzy ;) Die Band besteht aus Angelo Papas (Gitarre / Gesang), Johnny Guitare (Gitarre / Gesang), Rooliano (Bass / Gesang) und Ju DrumsAreCool (Schlagzeug / Hintergrundgesang). Diese verrückte Punkrock-Geschichte begann im Jahr 2004 und in mehr als 16 Jahren wurden mehrere Alben veröffentlicht, Tourneen durch Frankreich und Europa gespielt. Wir suchen immer noch nach der nächsten Studio-Session, Tour und können es kaum erwarten, wieder unterwegs zu sein.
Eine lustige Tatsache, ich bin einige Jahre nach dem Start der Band beigetreten, wie mein Stiefbruder Rooliano. Und fürs Protokoll, er hat mich an einem schönen Tag im Jahr 2014 oder 2015 angerufen und gesagt: „Champion, wir suchen einen Live-Schlagzeuger, der manchmal mitspielen kann. Interessierst du dich dafür?“ Ich sagte „Hölle ja“ und nach einigen Proben und Shows wurde es dauerhaft.
Was hat es mit dem Bandnamen auf sich?
Ju: Nun, man kann sagen, es ist ein Wortspiel mit Fonzy, der Figur aus Happy Days (TV-Show). Aber wir wollten, dass er mehr wie ein Punk-Pirat ist, alberner, und wir haben uns diesen Namen ausgedacht, als wir unser erstes Studioalbum aufgenommen haben, haha.
Eure Discografie ist ja schon beachtlich lange. Wie entstehen Dirty Fonzy Songs?
Ju: Grundsätzlich schreiben und komponieren wir alle Songs. Es gibt kein bestimmtes Muster oder eine geheime Formel, der wir jedes Mal folgen. Aber hauptsächlich erstellen wir unsere Tracks in der Probe, manchmal watet Johnny Guitare mit einem coolen Riff oder einem völlig neuen Song auf, manchmal ist es Angelo Papas, der eine Idee und die Vision des gesamten Tracks hat. Manchmal spielt Rooliano ein Killer-Riff, während wir einen Kaffee trinken oder nach einer neuen Melodie-Idee suchen. Dann bleiben wir bei diesen Riffs, Akkorden und mischen sie in dem speziellen Dirty Fonzy-Mixer, in dem jeder seine kleinen Gewürze hinzufügen kann. Und danach hast du einen frischen Punkrock-Cocktail bekommen, geschüttelt, nicht gerührt, haha (Glückwunsch an diejenigen, die die Referenz haben;))
Wenn ihr an neuen Songs arbeite. Was ist euch hier besonders wichtig? Welche Vorbilder habt ihr beim Songschreiben?
Ju: Hm, das ist eine schwierige Frage, aber das erste, was uns beim Schreiben eines Songs einfällt, ist, Spaß zu haben. Wir wollen einfach nur gute Songs machen und viel Spaß haben. Wenn die Leute sie mögen, ist es großartig! Unsere Vorbilder sind die gleichen wie unsere Einflüsse: RANCID, SOCIAL DISTORSION, DROPKICK MURPHYS, BOUNCING SOULS, GESICHT ZU GESICHT, SCREECHING WEASEL, THE CLASH, LES SHERIFF …
Ich höre Turbonegro, Backyard Babies, Psychopunch aber auch Rancid raus. Mit welchen Bands würdet ihr gerne die Bühne teilen?
Ju: Danke für diese freundlichen Worte! Ich denke, wir werden uns geehrt fühlen, die Bühne mit Rancid and Social Distortion oder Foo Fighters und Bad Religion zu teilen.
Was denkt ihr, ist bei Rock Musik heute wichtig?
Ju: Auf jeden Fall vereint, inklusiv, respektvoll und gemeinsam Spaß in der Grube haben, einen Drink teilen und sich daran erinnern, wie es ist, am Leben zu sein und sich mit anderen Menschen zu verbinden. Die Art von Werten, die Dirty Fonzy sowohl musikalisch als auch menschlich antreiben.
Wie werdet ihr in Frankreich wahrgenommen?
Ju: Ich kann mir meiner Antwort nicht hundertprozentig sicher sein und sie wird natürlich in gewisser Weise subjektiv sein, aber ich kann sagen, dass jedes Mal, wenn wir spielen, wo oder wann immer es ist, Menschen ein Lächeln auf den Lippen haben. Ich denke, sie stellen uns irgendwie als eine Punkrock-Band vor, die die Scheiße aus dem Gig rockt und Musik und Witze mit voller Geschwindigkeit teilt. Und wir sind beide gut auf der Bühne und auf der After-Party, haha…
In welchem Land spielt ihr am liebsten und warum?
Ju: Hm, es ist immer etwas Besonderes und anderes, während es das Land, die Stadt, die Menge usw. ist. Ich werde also nicht sagen, dass wir ein „Lieblingsland“ haben, aber Deutschland ist definitiv ein Rock’n’Roll-Land und wir hatten eine tolle Zeit Mit Uncommonmenfrommars um 2012 herum zu touren. Natürlich ist es immer großartig, in Frankreich, den Niederlanden und der Schweiz zu spielen, und wir haben einige unglaubliche Freunde getroffen, die im Laufe der Jahre zu unserer Großfamilie wurden.
Kommen wir zu den CDs und Songs. Welche CDs sind für euch selbst die wichtigsten und warum?
Ju: Woooohoooo ok, jetzt ist das wirklich schwer =) Natürlich sage ich unsere neueste Veröffentlichung „The Sky Can Fall On Us“ + „Still The Worst“, weil es eines der mächtigsten, eingängigsten und unterhaltsamsten Alben ist, die wir aufgenommen haben. Wir legen unser Herz und unsere Seele in diese 17 Tracks; Alle waren am Schreiben und Aufnehmen beteiligt und wir hatten unsere engsten Freunde, die uns halfen und mit uns feierten, während wir es verfolgten!
„Hangover and Broken Dreams“ überzeugt auf volle Distanz. Die Songs bleiben im Ohr. Was ist der Hintergrund zum Titel „Famous for Nothing“?
Ju: Vielen Dank :) Johnny Guitare wollte die Idiokratie aufklären, die Reality-TV in der Gesellschaft aufbaut. Die Tatsache, dass dumme Leute um jeden Preis berühmt sein wollen, „Freunde“ verraten, mit dem Gefühl der Leute spielen und kein besonderes Talent zu zeigen haben.
„No more crappy Songs“. Auch hier sicher mit einem Augenzwinkern zu sehen. Wem ist dieser Titel gewidmet?
Ju: Aaaaalso, es gibt niemanden, der direkt auf dieses Lied abzielt, haha. Es hängt mit der einfachen Tatsache zusammen, dass, wenn niemand unterwegs CDs oder eine Festplatte voller Alben mitbringt, die einzige Option übrig bleibt, die Radiosender einzuschalten … und sie sind ziemlich beschissen!
„Riot in the Pit“ als Veröffentlichung wirkt ebenfalls nach. Beschreibt der Song „Another day in the Road” das Tour-Leben von Dirty Fonzy oder was ist der Hintergrund?
Ju: Yup total! Es ist ein klares Bild davon, was man von Dirty Fonzy bei einer Show erwarten kann und weil wir einfach so viel wie möglich unterwegs sein und überall spielen wollen.
„Kreuzberg Blackout“. Wem ist dieses Stück gewidmet? Aus welchem Anlass ist es entstanden?
Ju: Dieser kommt mit einer lustigen Anekdote: Wir waren in Deutschland auf Tour und Angelo Papas hat sich zu sehr mit Alkohol und Alkohol beschäftigt (es war eine schwere Party da hinten). Irgendwann hatte er einen Stromausfall und wir mussten ihn zum Van tragen, damit er mit vielen warmen Decken schlafen und sich ausruhen konnte.
„Playing Punk Songs“. Ein schöner Titel einer CD. Und natürlich ein Titel der 100% auf euch passt. Welche Songs sind für euch hier die wichtigsten und warum?
Ju: Auf dieser ersten CD ist das wichtigste Lied wahrscheinlich „The Worst“, weil es den Geist, die Stimmung und die lustige Wendung der Band bestimmt. Es gab sogar eine Fortsetzung mit „Still The Worst“ auf unserem neuesten Album, haha.
2020 dann eine Doppel Veröffentlichung. „The Sky can Fall on us“ und „Still the worst”. Wie kam es zu dem Entschluss, zwei CDs raus zu bringen. Eine mit 10, die andere mit 7 Songs.
Ju: Wir wollten etwas Besonderes für diese Platte machen. Während wir die Songs schrieben, konnten wir zwei Trends klar unterscheiden: Einige waren mehr Pop-Punk, melodischer Punk-Rock-Stil und die anderen waren mehr Hardcore, Rock’n’Roll. Nachdem wir alle aufgenommen hatten, setzten wir uns hin, um die Trackliste zu erstellen, und als wir uns darüber unterhielten, dachten wir, wir könnten sie alle in ein Doppelalbum einfügen. Weil wir ein cooles Format wollten, um sie zu versiegeln, kamen wir auf die Idee, eine Dope-Doppel-LP mit farbigen Vinyls im Inneren zu veröffentlichen.
Die Cover der CDs passen natürlich super zusammen. Wer hat diese gestaltet? Eine Fortsetzungsgeschichte?
Ju: Danke vielmals! Unser guter Freund Aurelio, Tätowierer und Comiczeichner, hat dieses erstaunliche Kunstwerk für uns entworfen. Ja, es ist eine Fortsetzung der Geschichte, die die Titel „The Sky can Fall in us“ + „Still the worst“ zusammenfasst: Das Konzept bestand darin, uns in unseren alltäglichen Dingen zu karikieren, denn selbst während wir die Apokalypse erlebten, waren wir uns ziemlich sicher, dass wir es waren würde bei unserer Routine bleiben hahaha. Bitte beachten Sie, dass das Artwork und die Titel vor der gesamten COVID19-Sache erstellt wurden, hahaha. Als alles explodierte, dachten wir, dass es ein bisschen prophetisch mit der Platte war, hahaha ;)
„The Sky can Fall in us“. Der Song ist eine kleine Hymne. Eine Hommage an Asterix?
Ju: Hahaha, ich verstehe, was du dort sagst! Danach, als wir uns diesen Titel anschauten, sagten wir: „Oh, verdammt, es hat eine echte Asterix-Stimmung“, haha. Ich hatte das Gefühl, als wir 2019 spielten, wir waren so eng auf der Bühne, alles stimmte und wir haben einfach so Gigs gerockt. Bei einer Show ging viel schief. Angelo Papas hatte im zweiten Song ein Gitarrenproblem, wir hatten auch Mikrofonprobleme und Monitore, aber Rooliano kümmerte sich um alle Verse, unser Toningenieur Melba reparierte alles. Aber auch durch diesen „Scheißsturm“ standen wir still und machten das, was wir gerne machen: SPIELEN! Du kannst diesen Titel also auch mit Queens „The Show Must Go On“ zusammenfassen, haha.
Auch „Sound oft he Underground“ ist ein Song für viele Punkrock-Playlisten. Aus welchem Anlass ist dieses Stück entstanden?
Ju: Nun, mit diesem Track wollten wir eine Hymne komponieren, wie die Hymne für die Underground-Szene, die Punkrocker, die sich bei unseren Shows versammeln, bei den lokalen Konzerten, die die Szene unterstützen.
„Still the worst“ schockt unter anderem mit „Too old to Die Young“. Was war Auslöser für diese Nummer?
Ju: Oh, war es ein elektrischer Schlag, haha? Wie ich bereits sagte, ist „Still The Worst“ das Schwesterlied von „The Worst“, eine lustige Art zu sagen, dass sich in der Band in mentaler Hinsicht nicht viel geändert hat =) „Too Old To Die Young“ ist auch ein Schwesterlied, es folgt dem Hardcore-Geist von „Too Old For This Shit“. Im Jahr 2011 hatten wir eine Rezension, in der es heißt: „Sie sind zu alt für diese Art von Musik.“ Soooooo natürlich antworteten wir mit einem Track, einer vollständigen EP und diesem letzten Song haha…
Wir haben hier einige Stücke erwähnt, aber es fällt bei dieser Auswahl an tollen Songs schwer, die besten drei zu finden. Welche Stücke sind euch die wichtigsten?
Ju: Oh ja definitiv, es ist noch schwieriger für uns, Songs in unserer Setlist auszuwählen, haha. Die soliden Top 3 sind wahrscheinlich „Dirty Fonzy“, „The Worst“ und „Here We Go Again“ und jetzt müssen wir „So What?!“, „The Sky Can Fall On Us“, „Sound Of The Underground“ hinzufügen. , „Nachtschicht“ unter anderem; Was für eine schwierige Sache, haha!
Welche Stücke anderer Bands sind euch die wichtigsten?
Ju: Ich denke, eingängige Melodien zu schreiben ist eines der wichtigsten Dinge, um sich nicht zu langweilen und uns und den Zuhörern zu gefallen. Als Schlagzeuger bin ich immer neugierig auf verschiedene Rhythmen und Zusammenbrüche wie Travis Barker, der Pop-Punk oder Bill Stevenson in frühen Punkrock brachte. Wenn man sich auf unsere Einflüsse bezieht, werde ich sagen, dass das Songwriting von Screeching Weasel, Social Distortion, Face To Face und The Bouncing Souls wirklich wichtig ist. Man weiß, dass sie großartige Melodien und gute Vocal-Gimmicks haben. Dann die Energie von Rancid und Dropkick Murphys kombiniert mit dem Steinsaft von The Hellacopters. Verdammt, ich könnte stundenlang mit unserer Frage weitermachen, haha (wir sollten das wahrscheinlich mit einem guten alten Bier machen, sobald die Pandemie vorbei ist eh =))
Ihr habt nun schon einiges zusammen erlebt. Welche Anekdote aus der Dirty Fonzy Zeit muss unbedingt erzählt werden?
Ju: Es gibt eine Menge Anekdoten, die ich erzählen könnte und die wahrscheinlich viele Stunden dauern würden, haha. Wir spielten einmal in einer Skistation auf 2400 Metern Höhe und mussten zwischen den Liedern mit Sauerstoffmasken atmen, um zu Atem zu kommen. Als wir 2016 das Hellfest spielten, hätten wir auf unserem Weg fast unseren Van kaputt gemacht. aber wir haben es geschafft, pünktlich zu sein, haben unseren Soundcheck in der Warzone um 10 Uhr gemacht, hatten dann ein kleines Apéro mit den Technikern und haben dann um 10:30 die Scheiße rausgerockt haha! Eine andere, es war im Jahr 2017 in L’Isle Bouzon für das Distortion Fest, Johnny Guitare hat sich beim Spielen des dritten Songs des Sets die rechte Schulter ausgekugelt. Und rate was? Ich habe die ganze Show gemacht! Nach vielen Soli und Power-Akkorden ertönte das letzte Geräusch und die Feuerwehrleute brachten ihn ins nächste Krankenhaus. Respekt vor ihm!
Was habt ihr in diesem Jahr vor? Eine Tour? Neue Songs? Auf was dürfen wir uns (trotz Corona freuen)?
Ju: Dieses Jahr mag auch komisch sein … aber soweit wir können, planen wir einige Shows, eine Tour, um „The Sky Can Fall On Us“ + „Still The Worst“ richtig zu veröffentlichen! Wir arbeiten auch an neuen Videoclips, möglicherweise einem Live-Stream. Im Moment erwägen wir viele Optionen, wenn sich die Situation weiterentwickelt. Eines ist jedoch sicher: Sobald alles in Ordnung und sicher ist, werden wir unterwegs sein und spielen!

When I received two albums from the band Dirty Fonzy from our editor-in-chief in January 2021, at first, I didn’t know how to classify the band. But the cover of the records already indicated in which direction the band is headed. And indeed. Pure rock `n` roll by the brand Hellacopters, Backyard Babies, Turbonegro, Gluecifer, but also now and then a pinch of rancid. Pickled and found to be good. Top tip uhh rock tip of the week. For me a reason to check out the old albums and contact the guys. I was very happy that they agreed to answer a few questions for the Tough Magazine. Look forward to the interview with Dirty Fonzy.

Hey Marc and everybody at Tough Magazine ! Here’s Ju DrumsAreCool from Dirty Fonzy :) How are you doing ? Currently you’re catching me in my town, Toulouse, France and more specifically in our rehearsal room haha.
For those who do not know you yet, please introduce yourself.
Dirty Fonzy is a 4 piece Punk Rock band from Albi, France. Sometimes we’re more in a singalong mood with some friends in a pub and end up with a pop punk touch, sometimes we’re more like stage diving in the pit and we end up with some hardcore, melodic hardcore side haha. This is Dirty Fonzy in a way ;)
The band is composed of Angelo Papas (guitar/vocal), Johnny Guitare (guitar/vocal), Rooliano (bass/vocal) and Ju DrumsAreCool (Drummer/backing vocals). This crazy punk rock story started in 2004 and after more than 16 years, multiple albums released, tours across France and Europe ; we’re still digging for the next studio session, tour and can’t wait to be back on the road.
Fun fact, I joined the band several years after the beginning like my brother from another Rooliano. And for the record, he called me one beautiful day of 2014 or 2015 and said „champion, we’re looking for a live drummer who could fill in sometimes, are you interested in it ?“ I said „hell yeah“ and after some rehearsals and shows, it became permanent.
What is the band name about?
Well, you can say it’s a pun of words with Fonzy, the character from Happy Days (tv show). But we wanted him to be more like a punk pirate, more silly and we came up with this name while recording our first studio album haha.
You have a lot of releases in your discography. How are Dirty Fonzy Songs created?
Basically, we all write and compose songs. There’s no specific pattern or a secret formula that we follow every time. But mainly, we create our tracks in rehearsal, sometimes Johnny Guitare comes up with a cool riff or a full new song, sometimes it’s Angelo Papas who has an idea and the vision of the complete track. Sometimes Rooliano plays a killer riff while we’re drinking a coffee or seeking for a new tune idea. Then we stick with those riffs, chords and we blend them in the special Dirty Fonzy mixer where everybody can add his little spices. And after that, you got a fresh punk rock cocktail, shaken not stirred haha (congrats to those who have the reference ;) )
When you’re working on new songs. What is particularly important to you here? What role models do you have when you start with the songwriting?
Hum that’s a tough question but the first thing that comes in mind when we write a song is to have fun. We just wanna make good songs and have a bunch of fun, then if the people like them it’s awesome ! Our role models are the same as our influences : RANCID , SOCIAL DISTORSION, , DROPKICK MURPHYS, BOUNCING SOULS, FACE TO FACE, SCREECHING WEASEL, THE CLASH, LES SHERIFF…
You sound similar like Turbonegro, Backyard Babies, Psychopunch but also Rancid etc. Which bands would you like to share the stage with?
Thanks for those kind words ! I think we’ll be honoured to share the stage with Rancid and Social Distortion or Foo Fighters and Bad Religion
What do you think is important in rock music today?
Definitely being united, inclusive, respectful and having fun all together in the pit sharing a drink and remembering how it is to be alive, to connect with other humans. The kind of values that drive Dirty Fonzy, both musically and humanly.
How are you perceived in France?
I cannot be a hundred percent sure of my answer and of course it will be subjective in some ways, but I can tell that every time we play, wherever or whenever it is, people have smiles on their faces. I think they kinda picture us as a punk rock band rocking the shit out of the gig, sharing music and jokes at full speed. And we’re both good on stage and at the after party haha
In which country do you prefer to play and why?
Hum, it’s always special and different whereas it’s the country, the city, the crowd etc… So I won’t say that we have a “favorite country” but Germany is definitely a rock’n’roll country and we had a blast while touring with Uncommonmenfrommars around 2012. Of course, playing in France, the Netherlands, Switzerland is always great and we met some incredible friends that became our extended family through the years.
Let’s get to the CDs and songs. Which CDs are the most important for you and why?
Woooohoooo ok, now this one is really hard =) Of course, I’ll say our latest release “The Sky Can Fall On Us” + “Still The Worst” because it’s one of the most powerful, catchy and fun albums we have recorded. We put our heart and soul in those 17 tracks ; everybody was involved in the writing and the recording process and we had our closest friends to help us and party with us while tracking it!
“Hangover and Broken Dreams” convinces at full distance. What is the background to the title „Famous for Nothing“?
Thank you :) Johnny Guitare wanted to enlighten the idiocracy that reality TV is setting up in society. The fact that dumb people want to be famous at all cost, betraying “friends”, playing with people’s feeling and without having any particular talent to show.
„No more crappy songs“. Also here to be seen with a wink. Who is this title dedicated to?
Weeeeeell there’s nobody directly aimed with that song haha. It relates the simple fact that when nobody brings CDs or a hard drive full of albums when we’re on the road, the only option left is to tune on the radio stations… and they’re pretty fucked up !
„Riot in the Pit“: Does the song “Another day in the Road” describe Dirty Fonzy’s touring life or what is the background?
Yup totally ! It’s a clear picture of what you can expect of Dirty Fonzy at a show and because we just want to be as much as possible on the road, playing everywhere.
„Kreuzberg Blackout“. Who is this piece dedicated to? What was the reason for it?
This one comes with a funny anecdote : we were touring in Germany and Angelo Papas went too hard on booze and alcohol (it was a heavy party back there). At some point, he had a black out and we had to carry him to the van so he could sleep with a lot of warm blankets and rest.
“Playing Punk Songs”. A nice title for a CD. And of course a sentence that fits you 100%. Which songs are the most important for you and why?
On this first CD, the most important song is probably “The Worst” because it sets the spirit, the mood and the funny twist of the band. It even got a sequel with “Still The Worst” on our latest album haha.
Then a double release in 2020. „The Sky can Fall on us“ and „Still the worst“. How did you come to the decision to release two CDs? One with 10, the other with 7 songs.
We wanted to do something special for this record. While writing the songs, we could clearly distinguish 2 trends : some were more pop punk, melodic punk rock style and the others were more hardcore, rock’n’roll. After recording all of them, we sat down to make the tracklist and as we were chatting about it, we thought we could all put them in a double album. Because we wanted a cool format to seal them, we stood with the idea to release a dope double LP with colored vinyls inside !
The covers of the CDs naturally go perfectly together. Who designed this? A sequel story?
Thanks a lot ! Our good friend Aurelio who’s a tattoo artist and comics drawer designed this amazing artwork for us. Yup, it’s a sequel story that sums up the titles “The Sky Can Fall On Us” + “Still The Worst” : the concept was to caricature us in our everyday stuff because, even while experiencing the apocalypse, we were pretty sure that we would stuck with our routine hahaha.
Please note that the artwork and the titles were created before the whole COVID19 thing hahaha. When everything blew up, we thought that it was kinda prophetic with the record hahaha ;)
„The Sky can Fall in us“. The song is a little hymn. A tribute to Asterix?
Hahaha I see what you’re saying there ! Afterwards when we looked at that title we were like “Oh damn it got a real Asterix vibe” haha
I got that feeling when we played in 2019, we were so tight on stage, everything was on point and we just rocked gigs like that. At one show, a lot of stuff went wrong. Angelo Papas got a guitar problem through the second song, we got mic problems and monitors bugging around too but Rooliano took care of all the verses, our sound engineer Melba fixed everything. But even through this “shit storm” we stood still and did what we like to do : PLAY ! So you could sum up this title with Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” too haha.
“Sound of the Underground” is also a song for many punk rock playlists. What was the occasion for this piece?
Well with this track, we wanted to compose an anthem, like the anthem for the underground scene, the punk rockers that are gathering at our shows, at the local concerts, the ones that support the scene.
“Still the worst” shocks with, among other things, “Too old to Die Young”. What was the trigger for this number?
Oh, was it an electric shock haha ? Like I said previously, “Still The Worst” is the sister song to “The Worst” a funny way to say that thing have not changed a lot in the band on a mental point =)
Too Old To Die Young is also a sister song, it follows the hardcore spirit of “Too Old For This Shit”. Back in 2011, we had a review that stated something like “they’re too old for this kind of music” ; soooooo of course we replied with a track, a full EP and that last song haha
We mentioned a few tracks here, but with this selection of great songs, it’s hard to find the top three. Which pieces are the most important to you?
Oh yes definitely, it’s even harder for us to pick song in our setlist haha. The solid top 3 is probably “Dirty Fonzy”, “The Worst” and “Here We Go Again” and now we have to add “So What?!”, “The Sky Can Fall On Us”, “Sound Of The Underground”, “Night Shift” among others ; what a difficult thing to do haha !
Which pieces from other bands are the most important to you?
I think that writing catchy tunes is one of the most important things in order to not get bored with it and to please both us and the listeners. As a drummer, I’m always curious about different rhythms and breakdowns like Travis Barker brought in pop punk or Bill Stevenson in early punk rock. If you’re referring to our influences, I’ll say that the songwriting from both Screeching Weasel, Social Distortion, Face To Face and The Bouncing Souls is really important, you know having great melodies and good vocal gimmicks. Then the energy of Rancid and Dropkick Murphys combined with the rock juice of The Hellacopters. Damn, I could go on and on for hours with our question haha (we should probably do that with a good old pint once the pandemic is over eh =) )
You have already experienced a lot together. Which anecdote from the Dirty Fonzy era must be told?
There’s a ton of anecdotes that I could tell you and it would probably last for many hours haha. We once played in a skiing station at 2400 meters high and had to breath with oxygen masks between songs to catch our breath. When we played the Hellfest in 2016, we almost broke our van on our way ; but we managed to be right on time, did our sound check at the Warzone at 10 am then had a little apéro with the technicians and then rocked the shit out at 10:30 haha! An other one, it was in 2017 at L’Isle Bouzon for the Distortion Fest, Johnny Guitare dislocated his right shoulder while playing the 3rd song of the set. And guess what ? I DID THE ENTIRE SHOW ! After many solos and power chords, the last noise ringed and the firemen took him to the nearest hospital. Respect to him !
What are your plans for this year? A tour? New songs? What can we look forward to (despite Corona)?
This year might be weird too… but as far as we can, we’re planning some shows, a tour in order to release properly “The Sky Can Fall On Us” + “Still The Worst” ! We’re also working on new video clips, maybe a live stream. For now, we’re considering many options as the situation evolves. But one thing is sure, once everything will be alright and safe, we’ll be out on the road playing !
