Mit „Holger Danske“ haben The Old Firm Casuals ihr neues Album veröffentlicht. Wir haben uns mit Frontmann Lars Frederiksen über die Songs und weitere Themen unterhalten!

Hey, wo erwischen wir ich gerade?
Lars: Ich bin zuhause in San Francisco.

Euer neues Album „Holger Danske“ ist seit Kurzem erhältlich. Waren die Arbeiten im Studio wie immer oder habt ihr irgendwas anders gemacht?
Lars: Schön war es, dass sich alles sehr schnell zusammengefügt hat, als wir ins Studio gegangen sind. Wir haben eine gute Chemie untereinander. Meistens haben wir alles an Ort und Stelle erarbeitet. Es kam eine Idee, die wir dann direkt erarbeitet haben. Einige Songs hatten wir schon eine Weile (wie zum Beispiel „Zombies“) und andere Songs haben wir rausgeschmissen, als die Platte Gestalt angenommen hat. Also wenn die Scheibe einen schnelleren Song benötigt hat, haben wir uns darauf konzentriert.

Holger Danske ist eine dänische Legende und der Name einer Widerstands-Bewegung. Wie kam die Verbindung zu ihr und was mögt ihr so sehr daran?
Lars: Es ist eine sehr spannende Geschichte – aber um die Sache zu vereinfachen; die dänische Nationalmannschaft hat Holger Danske auf ihre WM-Trikots gesetzt. Als ich das sah, erinnerte es mich an seine Geschicht und ich dachte, dass es ein gutes Thema ist, zu dem ich einen Song schreibe könnte. Als wir die Platte aufnahmen, unterhielt ich mich mir meiner Mutter darüber und sagte ihr, dass wir überlegen, die Platte „Holer Danske“ nennen. Die erzählte mir dann, dass mein Onkel Viggo im Zweiten Weltkrieg in der „Danish Resistance Group“ gekämpft hat. Meine Mutter öffnet sich nie wirklich über diese Zeit ihres Lebens. Wahrscheinlich wegen des Schreckens und der Grausamkeiten, die sie als Kind von Nazis hautnah miterlebt hat. In diesem gegenwärtigen politischen Klima war Holger Danske die perfekte Metapher für ein antifaschistisches Lied!

Auf dem Album sind Songs über Verräter, eine Nation im Feuer oder es geht um eine Überdosis Sünde. Woher nehmt ihr die Ideen und welche Dinge inspirieren euch?
Lars: Die Einflüsse kommen von vielen Stellen. Lebenserfahrung im meisten Fall. Auch die Musik. Und ab und zu auch mein persönlicher politischer Blick. Die Alben, die wir machen, haben alle auch ein untergeordnetes Thema. Dieses Mal ist es natürlich Antifaschismus, Antirassismus und auch Unsterblichkeit. Es gibt keinen Mittwelweg mehr. Lösungen finden auf gemeinsamen Boden statt und wenn Menschen zusammenkommen.

„De Ensomme Ulve“ und „The Golden Fall Pt.1“ sind instrumentale Songs. Sollen es Intros oder eigenständige Songs sein? Welche Idee steckt dahinter?
Lars: Es sind voll realisierte Songs. Es sind instrumentale Songs und auch Intros!

Facebook, Smartphone – viele Menschen leben nur noch in einer virtuellen Welt. Wie siehst du das? Positiv oder negativ?
Lars: Hauptsächlich negativ. Und hier ist der Grund. Viele Menschen glauben das, was sie in den sozialen Medien lesen. Das ist schon lächerlich. Ich lebe nicht nach der Schaf-Menthalität. Ich denke für mich selbst. Schon immer – für immer! Das ist eine Selbsterziehung. Ich würd niemals Nachrichten in den sozialen Medien lesen oder mir eine Meinung zu etwas holen. Ich habe ein Gehirn. Man muss mir nicht sagen, was ich zu denken habe. Ich lese Bücher und ich habe Augen. Ich erhalte meine Informationen vom täglichen Leben und anderen Wegen. Habe ich Accounts auf den Social-Media-Kanälen? Ja, habe ich. Aber ich verstehe sie!

Wie schon erwähnt, die Welt verändert sich, meiner Meinung nach. Wieviel Bedeutung hat der Spruch „Tradition schlägt jeden Trend“ für dich?
Lars: Trends sind hart. Traditionen zählen zur letzten Generation und es ist eine tolles Shirt von Stomper 98.

Was sollten die Regierungen machen und was können die Menschen ändern? Was läuft falsch?
Lars: Ich bin kein Politiker und möchte auch keiner sein, ich glaube auch nicht wirklich stark an Regierungen. In den USA denken die Politiker an sich und nicht an ihr Land. Sie sorgen sich mehr um die Wiederwahl als um das Volk. Nun, die Menschheit muss alles selber regeln. Jeder ist so verdammt ernst, das nervt. Zu viele berechtigte Arschlöcher in der Welt.

Zurück zur Musik – das Album erscheint auch auf Vinyl. Wie wichtig ist dir das schwarze Gold? Obwohl, in schwarz erscheint es gar nicht, oder?
Lars: Ihr müsst immer Musik auf Vinyl veröffentlichen, es ist der einzige Weg, die ich zuhause Musik höre. Doch, es gibt schwarze Platten – die wurden für die Promo gepresst.

Was bedeuten dir die folgenden Wörter?

Hey, where do we catch you right now?
A: I’m at home in San Francisco

Your new album „Holger Danske“ has been released. Did the work in the studio work as usual or did you something different?
A: Fortunately for us when we get in the studio things come together pretty quick. We have a great chemistry with each other. Most of the time we write the songs on the spot. It always starts with an idea of course but we bang em out right then and there. Some of the songs we had for a while (like Zombies) and others we kind of hash out depending on the way the records taking shape. So if the record feels like it needs a faster song for instance then we focus in on that.

Holger Danske is a danish legend hero and the name of a resistance group – how did the connection to the character come about and what do you like about her so much?
A: it’s a very involved story but to simplify it the Danish National Team put Holger Danske on the front of their World Cup Jersey. When I saw it, it reminded me of the story of him and I thought that would be a really good topic to write a song about. As we were recording the record I had a conversation with my mom about it and I told her we were thinking about calling the record Holger Danske. She then told me that my Uncle Viggo had fought in the Danish Resistance Group in WWII. My mom never really opens up about that period of her life. Probably because of the horror and atrocities that she witnessed first hand by Nazi’s as a young child. In this current political climate where I feel fascism is running wild Holger Danske was the perfect metaphor for an anti-fascist song.

The new songs are about traitors, a nation on fire oder an overdose of sin – where do you get the ideas from and what kind of things are currently influencing you?
A: they come from a lot of places. Life experience mostly. Music as well. Sometimes my personal political views. The records we make always have an underlying theme. This one is unapologetically ANTI-FASCIST and ANTI-RACIST. it also deals with immortality. Also people in general need to lighten the fuck up. There’s no middle ground anymore. Solutions happen on common ground and when people come together.

„De Ensomme Ulve“ and „The Golden Fall Pt.1“ are instrumental songs. Should it be intros or singles titles? Which idea is behind this?
A: they are fully realized songs in my opinion. They are both instrumentals and intro’s.

Facebook, smartphones – many people only live in a virtual world. How do you see this? Positive or rather negative?
A: Mostly negative. And this is why. People believe what they see on social media and take it for fact. It’s ridiculous. I’m not into the sheep mentality. I think for myself. Always have always will. That comes from educating myself. I would never goto social media for my news or to find a place to base an opinion. I have a brain. I don’t need to be told what to think. I read books. I also have eyes. I get my information from life experience and other avenues. Do I have social media accounts? Yes I do. But I understand what it is and what they are.

As i said, the world is changing at the moment, in my opinion. How much do you think the saying „Tradition beats every trend“?
A: Trends die hard. Tradition lasts generations. also a great shirt from Stomper 98

What should governments do and what should humanity change today? What’s going wrong?
A: I’m not a politician nor do I want to be so I don’t really have a strong belief in governments. in the USA politicians are loyal to their party not to their country. they are more concerned about re-election than the people. As far as humanity? well humanity needs to lighten the fuck up. everybody is so fuckin self serious it’s annoying. too many entitled assholes in the world.

Back to the music – the album also appears on vinyl. How important is the black gold to you? Although „Holger Danske“ does not appaer in black, right? :-)
A: you always gotta make vinyl. its the only way I listen to music when I’m home. there are black copies of HD out there. they were done for promo’s.
