Love Equals Death haben eine neue 7″-Split EP am Start. Wir haben uns mit Frontmann Chon Travis über die Songs und weitere Themen unterhalten.

Hey, wo erwischen wir dich gerade?
Chon: Du hast mich zu Hause in meinem Musikzimmer erwischt, beim Beantworten dieses Interviews in Ukiah, Kalifornien.

Ihr seit mit einer neuen 7″-EP zurück. Wo bist du gewesen und was hast du gemacht?
Chon: Ich war überall. Ich war auf Reisen, hatte ein Kind, habe gemeinnützige Arbeit geleistet und meistens nur den richtigen Zeitpunkt gefunden, um wieder Musik zu spielen.

Was hat euch dazu bewegt wieder gemeinsam Musik zu machen und ins Studio zu gehen?
Chon: Was mich dazu veranlasste, war, dass ich möglicherweise nie wieder in der Lage sein werde, wenn ich nicht bald anfange, Musik zu spielen. Ich musste es einfach tun und es nicht länger aufschieben. Musik ist ein Teil meiner Seele und ohne sie fühle ich mich nicht vollständig.

Ihr habt zwei neue Songs veröffentlicht. Erzähl uns etwas darüber, was brannte dir auf der Seele in den letzten Jahren?
Chon: Wir haben tatsächlich 2 Songs auf dem Vinyl veröffentlicht, da es sich um eine 7-Zoll-Split-Platte mit einer großartigen Band namens The Static Age handelt, und ich bin super begeistert von den Songs. Das Leben ist immer in meinem Kopf. Ich schreibe über meine persönlichen Lebenserfahrungen in der Hoffnung, dass andere irgendeine Verbindung herstellen.

Die EP wurde bei SBÄM Records veröffentlicht – wie kam der Kontakt zustande?
Chon: SBÄM ist unglaublich und wir sind ihnen sehr dankbar. Die Verbindung wurde von einem ebenso erstaunlichen Menschen namens Felix Willikonsky hergestellt. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, wie es genau gelaufen ist, aber ich weiß, dass wir mit Felix über eine Europatour gesprochen haben und ein paar Ideen entstanden sind und sich die Dinge gerade erst daraus entwickelt haben.

17 Jahre Love Equals Death, aber „nur“ ein Album. Wird Zeit für eine neues, oder? Was sind eure Pläne?
Chon: Wir proben gerade das neue Album. Wir haben 2 Alben, 2 EPs und eine Handvoll Zusammenstellungen. Das andere Album wurde nur in Japan veröffentlicht und heißt „The Prelude“. Wir werden hoffentlich ein neues Album im Sommer 2021 veröffentlichen.

Glaubst du immer noch, dass die Liebe gleichzustellen ist mit dem Tod? Weisst du noch, wie euer Bandname entstanden ist?
Chon: Absolut. Liebe ist gleichbedeutend mit dem Tod des Hasses, Liebe ist gleichbedeutend mit dem Tod der Angst, Liebe ist gleichbedeutend mit der Isolation des Todes und der Einsamkeit. Wenn du anfängst, etwas zu lieben, stirbt ein Teil von dir, während du für die Verpflichtung der Liebe opferst. Es ist immer noch dasselbe wie zu Beginn der Band.

Corona – kam die Entscheidung, wieder gemeinsam Musik zu machen vor der Pandemie oder danach? Und wie sehr kam sie euch in die Quere?
Chon: Wir haben vor dem Start von Corona angefangen und es hat uns in Bezug auf Shows verlangsamt, aber es hat uns Zeit gegeben, auf das Schreiben und die Vorbereitung unseres nächsten Albums zu achten.

Chon: Vielen Dank, dass du dich an Love Equals Death und an mich gewandt hast. Ich vermisse Deutschland wirklich und kann es kaum erwarten, in den Ferien wieder Live-Shows zu spielen und Glühwein zu trinken.

Hey, where do we catch you right now?
You caught me at home in my music room responding to this interview in Ukiah, California.

You are back with a new 7 „EP – where have you been in the last few years and what have you been doing?
I’ve been all over the place. I did some traveling, I had a kid, I’ve been doing community service work, and mostly just finding the right time to start playing music again.

What prompted you to make music together again and go to the studio?
The thing that prompted me was that, if I don’t start playing music soon, I may never be able to again. I just had to do it and not put it off any longer. Music is a part of my soul and without it, I don’t feel complete.

You have released two new songs. Tell us about it – what has been on your mind in recent years?
We actually released 2 songs on the vinyl as it is a split 7” record with an awesome band called The Static Age and I am super stoked about the songs. Life is always on my mind. I write about my personal life experiences in hopes that others will make some type of connection.

The new EP was published by SBÄM – how did the contact come about?
SBÄM is amazing and we are very grateful for them. The connection was made by an equally amazing person name Felix Willikonsky. I’m not sure exactly how it all went down, but I know that we had been talking to Felix about touring Europe and a few ideas came about and things just developed from there.

17 years of Love Equals Death, but „only“ one album – time for a follow-up, right? What are the plans?
We are rehearsing the new album now. We have 2 albums, 2 ep’s, and a handful of compilations. The other full length was only released in Japan and it is called “The Prelude”. We will hopefully have a full length ready for summer 2021.

Do you still think that love equals death too? Do you still know how your band name came about back then?
Absolutely. Love equals the death of hate, love equals the death of fear, love equals the death isolation and loneliness. Also, when you begin to love something, a part of you dies as you sacrifice for the commitment of love. It is still the same as when the band started.

Corona – did the decision come before or during the pandemic that you wanted to make music again? And how much did she get in between you?
We started before corona started and it has slowed us down as far as shows are concerned, but it gave us time to pay attention to writing and preparing for our next album.
